What Happens to Your Data
You export your chat from WhatsApp
You use WhatsApp's built-in export feature to create a .zip file on your device. ThreadRecap never accesses your WhatsApp account.
The file is unzipped in your browser
Your .zip file is opened and parsed entirely in your browser. Photos and videos are read there and never sent to us — they are held in your browser's own storage so an interrupted upload can resume, and clearing your browser data removes them.
You preview and choose what to analyze
Before anything is sent, you see a full preview: message count, participants, date range. You can filter by date, select specific participants, and choose whether to include voice messages.
Only text and opted-in audio are sent
Text messages are sent encrypted (TLS) to our servers for AI analysis. Voice messages are only sent if you explicitly opt in to transcription. Photos and videos are never sent.
AI processes your data and returns results
Configured AI providers analyze your text. OpenAI's audio transcription API processes selected voice messages. Results are returned directly to ThreadRecap.
You control your data
Your chat text and any saved analysis stay stored on our servers so you can revisit them and chat with your analysis. Voice messages you sent for transcription are kept with the recap so you can play them back next to their transcript. You can delete the audio on its own, or the whole recap, anytime from your dashboard — deleting a recap deletes its audio with it.

We never read, browse, or manually review your conversations
We never sell your data or share it for advertising. Configured service providers receive only what is needed to deliver the features you request
We never use your data to train AI models
We never use your chat messages for training, and we give you full control to delete them anytime from your dashboard
