One dispute, one dossier

Below is the document itself, part by part, as it is being designed. It is not built, it is not on sale, and this page takes no money. What we want is your read on whether the shape is right.

Case dossier — supplier payment dispute

Case dossier — supplier payment dispute

2026-0184

1.Front sheet

Conversation between:
Two participants, named in full on page 2
Period covered:
9 March 2025 to 2 February 2026
Messages accounted for:
2,314 of the 2,314 in the export
Source file:
WhatsApp export, .zip, received 18 April 2026
File fingerprint:
9f2a4c…c41d
Fingerprint taken by:
Our server, at the moment the file arrived
Times written in:
Europe/Lisbon, as recorded in the export

Two of these rows carry the weight. The coverage line says how many messages the dossier accounts for out of how many were in the file, so a gap is something you can see rather than something you have to assume. The fingerprint never appears without the line saying who took it.

2.Chronology, entry 41 of 96

14 August 2025

The delivery date moves for the second time

Written by the tool

The supplier proposes a new date and the buyer accepts it within the hour. This is the second change to the same date.

The messages behind it

Supplier · 14 Aug 2025, 09:41

We can't make the 20th. Earliest is the 29th, I'm sorry.

Buyer · 14 Aug 2025, 10:16

The 29th works if the price stays where we agreed.

Source: exhibit B, page 31, messages 1,187 and 1,190

Page 14

The reading and the messages never merge. Anyone can disagree with the sentence at the top and still have the two messages underneath it, each with its date, its time and its author.

3.Exhibit C — a voice message

AUD-20250902-WA0007.opus · 1 min 12 s · 2 September 2025, 18:52

Transcript, machine-produced

Look, I already paid the first half on the 20th, I have the receipt right here. What I'm not doing is paying the rest before the pallets arrive.

The recording itself

Travels with the dossier and is referenced by its filename. Transcription quality varies with the recording, so the audio stays the thing anyone can go back to.

Page 33

A transcript never stands in for a recording, and a translation never stands in for the original message. The dossier labels which is which on every page where it happens.

4.Statement of truth

I have read this dossier. The messages reproduced in it are, to the best of my knowledge, the messages in the export I supplied.

The block ships empty and stays empty. Whoever puts their name to a case is a person, and this document is built to be adopted by one, never to stand in for one.

This is the design being discussed, drawn by us. It is not a screenshot of a finished product, no part of it is built yet, and the dispute in it is invented.

Answer the three steps

Nothing on this page is for sale. The three questions at the foot of it are what decide the first version.

What the dossier is

Four properties of the document being designed, in the order the specimen shows them: the front sheet, a chronology entry, an exhibit, and the last page.

The whole conversation travels with it

A selection nobody can audit reads as cherry-picking. The complete record sits beside the analysis, so the other side can check what was left out.

Every claim points at a message

Each line carries the date, the time and the author of the message behind it, so any statement can be checked without reading the export again.

The original is never replaced

Transcription and translation are machine output with an error rate. The original text stays beside them, and the dossier says which is which.

Ready for a person to sign

The dossier is built to be adopted by whoever puts their name to it. It is paginated, its method is stated, and the same input produces the same document again.

What has to happen between the export and the hearing

Four steps, in the order a case forces them. The first two you can do today with what already exists. The last two are what the dossier is for.

1

Get the whole conversation out of WhatsApp

Export the chat with media, from the phone that holds it. A screenshot is a fragment; the export is the record, and it is the only thing worth working from.

2

Find the few lines that decide it

Somewhere in months of messages sit the promise, the day it changed and the sentence someone regrets. Reading for them by hand is where the days go.

3

Turn them into something you can hand over

A lawyer, a mediator or the other side needs a document with dates, authors and page numbers — not a phone held out across a table.

4

Survive the first challenge to it

The first question is always where a line came from. The second is what was left out. Either the document answers both, or you answer them from memory.

Before a word is written

Five things the file is checked for

Every one of these comes out of reading the export itself, which is why the dossier will be able to name the checks that ran and say what each one found.

What the checks look at

  • Dates written in one format, all the way through
  • Lines the app itself wrote, kept apart from what people typed
  • Attachment names and their numbering, in the order the export made them
  • Messages that run forward in time, with nothing out of sequence
  • Author names that stay the same person from the first message to the last
What a clean run does not mean
It means nothing inside the file contradicts itself. It does not mean the file is real, and no check on a text file can mean that. The result is written down either way, including the checks that found nothing to report.

The honest floor

What can be shown, and what nothing can show

The second column is the reason to believe the first one. It belongs here, beside the promise, and not in small print at the bottom.

What the dossier will be able to show

What was said, when, by whom, and in what order.

That the record was not cut down to the convenient part.

Which words came from a person and which came from a machine.

That the file has not changed since it arrived, and who took the fingerprint that says so.

Which consistency checks ran, and what each one found.

What no document can show, ours included

That the export came out of WhatsApp untouched. It is a plain text file written on a phone, and nothing signs it.

That a fingerprint says where a file came from. It says which bytes arrived and when, and only that.

That a badge means anything. Any tool can print one, which is why this document will not.

Keep your original export somewhere safe. It is the one thing you can produce yourself if the other side asks where the record came from.

What it does not do

These belong on the document itself, not in a footnote under a web page, and that is where they are going.

It does not decide what a court will accept. Admissibility is the court's call and the test differs by country. Ask a lawyer where you are.

It cannot verify that an export is genuine. No tool can — an export reproduces altered data just as faithfully. Keep the original file.

It is not legal advice, and nothing here is.

The part written by the tool is the tool's reading of the messages. The messages are the evidence; the conclusions are not.

Who it is being designed for

Four people, one document

These are the roles the form asks about, because which of you answers is what decides the country this gets built for first.

Lawyers

You are handed an export and you bill by the hour to read it. The dossier is that reading, laid out so any line of it can be checked against the message it came from.

Mediators

Both sides arrive with their own version of the same thread. The complete conversation travels with the dossier, so neither side can say the other picked its moments.

Experts and investigators

You put your name on what you file. The dossier states its method, prints its limits and reproduces from the same input, so what you sign is something you can defend.

People with no lawyer

You have the conversation and no way to hand it over as a document. Nothing here assumes a firm behind you, and the form does not ask for one.

Why it starts from what cannot be proven

A WhatsApp export is a text file your phone writes. Nothing signs it, nothing stamps it, and anyone can open it and change a line before passing it on. That is true of every tool that reads one, including the ones whose badges suggest otherwise.

So the design starts from the other end. Instead of making a claim about the file, the dossier makes every sentence in it checkable: the date, the time and the author sit next to the words, the whole conversation travels alongside, and the machine-written half is labelled as machine-written. If a line is wrong, the person reading it can see that it is wrong.

The rest is what can honestly be accounted for — when the file arrived, that it has not changed since, and what a set of structural checks did and did not find. None of that proves an export is real. Together they are what an artefact can offer without pretending.
