Voice & transcription

WhatsApp will not write out your voice messages

Work through the checks below first. When none of them help — or when the feature works and still leaves you tapping one recording at a time — the export route writes out every recording in the conversation in one pass.

  • Photos & video files stay on your device. Every voice message is sent for transcription. From a video, only the audio track your browser extracts is sent for transcription; the video file and its pictures stay on your device.

Hear it, then read it

Three voice messages, transcribed the way yours will be

Press play on any of them. The text underneath is what came back from the recording, in the same player and the same transcript block you get inside a recap.

  • opus
  • m4a
  • ogg
  • mp3
These three recordings are AI-generated samples, so nobody's real voice is published here. Your own export keeps its original recordings.

Hey, real quick about the meeting yesterday — I think we should go with the second option for the homepage. Yeah, the second one.

Ah, and the budget — it's approved! So we can move forward with the contractor this week, no problem.

Every voice message in your export is sent for transcription.

How it works

1

Export the chat with media

Open the chat, tap the name at the top, choose Export chat and pick the option that includes media. The .zip that arrives holds the recordings the phone refused to write out.

2

See the price before anything runs

See the exact price on the upload screen. Unlock the full conversation only when it is worth it.

3

Read the whole conversation

Each recording comes back as text at the moment it was sent, so the conversation reads as one thing whether a line was typed or spoken.

What you get

The checks first, then the route that does not depend on the phone feature at all.

Check these first

Five things worth trying before you give up on the built-in feature, in the order they are worth trying.

Check the setting is on. In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Chats, and look for voice message transcripts. The phone downloads a language pack the first time you turn it on.

Check your language is offered. WhatsApp offers transcripts in a limited set of languages, and that set is not the same on every phone. Where yours is not offered, the entry is simply absent.

Check the language pack finished downloading. It needs free space and a connection, and a phone short of either leaves the switch on with nothing behind it.

Check the app is current, then reopen the chat. The text is produced on the handset, so an older build does not have the feature to give you.

Press and hold the voice message and ask again. When it still does not arrive, the recording itself is what the phone will not read, and no setting changes that.

What it does not do, even when it works

WhatsApp's Help Center describes transcripts as text versions of voice messages (faq.whatsapp.com/241617298315321, read 23 September 2026). That sentence is also the limit of the feature.

  • One at a time — the text is produced for the message you asked about. A conversation holding two hundred recordings is two hundred requests.
  • It stays on the phone — export the conversation afterwards and the .txt names each recording without saying a word of what was in it.
  • It is not one searchable text — there is nothing to search across months of spoken messages, only recordings to open one by one.
  • It is about voice messages. On the website, speech in your videos becomes text too, placed where each video was sent.

Key benefits

Every recording in the conversation written out in one upload, instead of one tap at a time

Independent of what your handset offers, because the text is produced from the export rather than on the phone

A forwarded recording is read like any other file in the export

Each transcript sits at the moment it was sent, beside the typed messages around it

The conversation becomes one text you can search, quote and keep

One price for the conversation, shown before anything runs

Use cases

A phone that never offered it

The setting is missing or your language is not on the list, and the recordings keep arriving anyway.

A group you stopped opening

Dozens of recordings nobody is going to press and hold one by one.

An everyday dispute

A repair, a deposit or an order agreed out loud, now needed in writing with the date it was said.

A business partnership

Two partners who ran the company by voice message and now need what was agreed as one readable record.

Questions? Answered.

Usually because your language is not one WhatsApp offers transcripts in, or because the setting has never been turned on. Open Settings, then Chats, and look for voice message transcripts. Where the entry is absent altogether, your phone and language are not covered and no setting brings it back.

It is one of the most common complaints, and nothing on the phone reliably fixes it. The export route does not depend on the feature at all: a forwarded recording is a file inside the .zip like any other, and it is written out with everything else.

Yes, and that is the point of doing it from the export. Export the chat with media and upload the .zip once. Every recording inside is written out and placed at the moment it was sent, however many of them there are.

No. What the phone writes stays in the chat on that phone; the exported .txt names each recording and leaves out what was said in it. That gap is the reason this page exists.

Nothing is written out before you pay, and the price sits on the upload screen first. One payment covers the conversation, set by its size, and the recordings inside count towards that size rather than being billed on their own.

The .zip is opened in your browser and only what the analysis needs is sent. Photos and video files never leave your device; from a video, only the audio track your browser extracts is sent for transcription. You can delete the audio, the chat or the whole analysis at any time from your dashboard.

Privacy and security

Parsing happens in your browser; only what is needed for analysis is sent.

Stored on our servers. Delete chat, audio and analyses anytime from your dashboard.

Photos, video files, and their visual content never leave your device. For transcription, we send chat text and the audio of every voice message, including the audio track your browser extracts from each video.
