Export guides & troubleshooting

WhatsApp export chat not working? Fix it fast — and still get your recap.

Quick fixes for export missing, failed, or stuck. If the chat is large, export without media and check what the file covers.

  • Photos & videos stay on your device. Audio sent for transcription only if you opt in. If you select a video, your browser extracts and sends only its audio track for transcription; the video and its visual content stay on your device.

Quick fixes checklist

1

Try without media

Try “Export without media” — smaller file, fewer failures.

2

Free up storage

Free up storage — low space can break export.

3

Check chat privacy

Check Advanced chat privacy — admin may have disabled export for that chat.

Now that you have the export

Upload the .zip and get a summary, a timeline you can follow, and every voice message in writing. The preview and the price are free to look at, so nothing is spent before you decide.

What to do when export fails

Most issues come from size, storage, or privacy settings. Once you have a working export, you can turn WhatsApp threads into meeting minutes or build a WhatsApp evidence report on the same upload.

Quick fixes checklist

Try these in order.

  • Export without media when you only need text. It makes a smaller file, but it does not include voice-message files.
  • Free up storage — WhatsApp needs space to create the .zip. Clear cache or move files, then retry.
  • Check Advanced chat privacy — in some groups, “Export chat” is disabled by the admin. See our “WhatsApp advanced chat privacy export blocked” page. If the dispute is heading to a hearing, the WhatsApp messages in small-claims court guide covers the format judges expect.
  • Restart WhatsApp or the device — sometimes export is stuck due to a temporary glitch.

If your chat is too large: export without media and check coverage

There is no dependable size guarantee from WhatsApp, and the caps quoted online do not hold.

  • Export without media — a smaller file that usually reaches further back. Enough for most summaries and action items. Upload that .zip to ThreadRecap.
  • Check coverage in preview after uploading the intact ZIP. It shows the available dates and lets you choose the part you need before analysis.
