Where is my WhatsApp export saved on Android?
Nowhere, unless you chose a destination when the sharing panel appeared. Here is why, and exactly how to get the file back in under two minutes.
- Photos & videos stay on your device. Audio sent for transcription only if you opt in.
How to get the export back
Open WhatsApp, open the chat, tap the three dots at the top right, then More, then Export chat.
Choose Include media if you want the voice messages. Wait for the sharing panel to appear, and do not close it.
Tap Save as file if you have a Samsung, or Google Drive on any other Android. Now the file exists, and you can upload it here.
Now that you have the export
Upload the .zip and get a summary, a timeline you can follow, and every voice message in writing. The preview and the price are free to look at, so nothing is spent before you decide.
What the file is for once you have it
Getting the export out of WhatsApp is the hard part, and it is over. The same .zip then gives you a readable summary, a searchable record, or a transcript of every voice message in the conversation.
The honest answer: it was never saved
This is the question we hear most often from Android users, and almost every guide online answers it wrongly by naming a folder. There is no folder.
The file is not in Downloads, not in a WhatsApp folder, not in internal storage, and not in your Files app. Searching for it will not find it, on any Android phone, no matter how long you look.
WhatsApp builds the export inside its own private area and offers it to the sharing panel once, as a one-time hand-off. It is never written anywhere you can browse. Whatever you tapped in that panel is the only place a copy exists.
So if you closed the panel, or tapped outside it, or your phone rang: nothing was saved and nothing was lost either. Export the chat again and this time tap a destination. It takes about a minute, and this time the file stays.
What to tap, on your phone
Two Androids, two different options, plus the part that catches people out afterwards.
- Samsung (Galaxy phones and tablets): the sharing panel has Save as file. It is sometimes hidden behind More, so look there if you do not see it at first. It saves the .zip to your Downloads folder, and you can pick it from there like any other file.
- Every other Android (Pixel, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus and the rest): there is no Save as file option. Tap Google Drive in the sharing panel and save it to your Drive. Nothing is downloaded to the phone, and the file is safe.
- Then, and this is the part almost nobody is told: you do not have to download it from Drive. Tap the upload button on ThreadRecap, and when Android's file window opens, tap the menu in the top left corner and choose Google Drive. Your .zip is right there, ready to pick.
- On an iPhone it works differently, and more simply: tap the chat name, then Export Chat, then Attach Media, then Save to Files. The file really is saved, and you can find it again in the Files app.
Why this keeps happening
The sharing panel looks optional, and it is not
Nothing warns you that closing it destroys the file
Most guides name a Downloads folder that never receives it
Samsung phones behave differently from every other Android
The file window on Android hides Drive behind a menu
Nothing is lost: the chat is intact and the export can be redone
